Head of Analytics & Data Science

Köln
Full-time
Permanent employee

Job overview

Shape how a travel business measures, decides, and grows. At Eurowings, data is at the heart of every decision. As Head of Analytics & Data Science, you will lead the central Business Intelligence capability of Eurowings: consolidated within Eurowings Digital, serving the whole company. You will report into the Unit Lead Digital Marketing & Sales while carrying a cross-company mandate, building the measurement system behind our commercial and product decisions and working closely with commercial, product, service, operations, and technology teams across our travel ecosystem, including departments that maintain their own specialised analytics capabilities.

This is a role with a trajectory. Eurowings is evolving its operating model around value streams and enabling capabilities, and the analytics function is set to grow further in autonomy and scope as that model matures, potentially extending into operational analytics. You will not inherit a finished setup; you will shape one.

What you will do

  • Define and execute the Business Intelligence strategy for Eurowings as the central enabling capability serving all departments and domains.
  • Own the company-wide measurement infrastructure: KPI frameworks, reporting standards, forecasting methodologies, and performance dashboards that our departments and domains steer with. They own their commercial decisions and outcomes; you make sure they can trust the numbers they steer by.
  • Lead a multidisciplinary organisation of three teams, Commercial Analytics, Digital Analytics, and Data Science, each headed by a team lead, and develop them into a high-performing analytics function.
  • Run a hybrid operating model: central platform discipline and analytics standards combined with analysts working directly into cross-functional product teams, with a transparent mechanism for allocating analytics capacity across competing priorities.
  • Act as the craft leader for analytics quality across the organisation, setting standards for how insight is produced, validated, and communicated, in close collaboration with departments that operate their own analytics.
  • Deepen our partnership with Revenue Management: your data science teams co-develop demand forecasting and pricing models with RM, which owns the pricing decisions they inform, applying the same principle that runs through this role: you build the models, the decision owners decide.
  • Advance the function beyond reporting towards predictive and prescriptive analytics and increasingly ML-driven decision automation in digital pricing, personalisation, and campaign optimisation: your teams build and operate the models, the domains own the decision logic and outcomes they execute.
  • Democratise data access beyond traditional BI consumers through LLM-powered analytics assistants, natural-language querying, and automated insight generation, embedded in strong self-service enablement, training, and governance.
  • Develop the analytics and data science teams to work hands-on on our shared data platform alongside the Data Engineering colleagues in our Tech & Engineering unit, contributing to scalable, production-grade data products.
  • Build and scale our experimentation capability so that product and commercial decisions are tested, not assumed.
  • Ensure our use of data and AI is responsible and compliant, including readiness for the EU AI Act and adjacent regulatory requirements, particularly where models automate pricing and personalisation decisions.

What you will need

What Success Looks Like: As an enabling function, your impact shows up in how well the rest of the organisation decides and moves: adoption of self-service analytics, time from question to trustworthy answer, data quality and metric consistency across departments, experiment velocity, and the reliability of the forecasts and models the business runs on.

  • University degree in Business, Economics, Data Analytics, Statistics, Computer Science, or a related field
  • Several years of leadership experience in Business Intelligence, Analytics, or Data Science, including leading leaders and building multidisciplinary teams
  • Experience running or working within federated or hub-and-spoke analytics operating models, where a central function serves multiple business units with competing priorities
  • Track record of bringing analytics and machine learning solutions into production together with engineering partners, not only into slide decks
  • Strong commercial mindset and proven ability to translate data into business value, combined with the judgment to know where analytics ends and business ownnership begins

What you will bring

  • Working familiarity with responsible AI practices and the emerging European regulatory landscape
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills in a complex, multi-brand environment
  • Experience with modern BI and analytics ecosystems (e.g., SQL, Power BI, Tableau, cloud data platforms)
